Urban Health Center (UHC), under the jurisdiction of Government Medical college, Miraj was established on 19/10/1976 according to the G.R.-U.D.PH.D.No.DSP.5175/16023-PH-3,Dtd:-12/03/1976. UHC works under administrative control of GMC, Miraj. Postgraduate students, undergraduate students, interns and nursing students are posted at UHC for their training.
At this centre, training regarding health services, urban health problems, social awareness about health problems, Family Health Studies, implementation of various National Health Programmes etc. is imparted to the above mentioned trainee students.
UHC lies 2.5 km south to Govt. Medical College, Miraj and is in the heart of the city. It is situated in proximity of the adopted area of the UHC.
UHTC provides all possible health facilities to the citizens of adopted area. For the proper functioning of UHC, the total population of adopted area has been divided into 4 parts. Health workers are appointed in each of the part. Various National Health Programs, surveys, ANC clinic, Under Five Clinic, Immunization etc. are held in the sectors as well as at the center.

UHC provides outpatient services to the population in adopted community and its surrounding area. The place of UHC being central one, the patient drain is good one. With the support of the Lab services, routine ailments are treated here. For Serious cases referral services are provided to GMC, Miraj. Specialty Clinics are organized at the Center for convenience of the patients.
Various routine investigations like Hb, CBC, ESR, Urine, Blood sugar etc are available at the center. These are available in the Center as well as in the Community during Camps.
All essential ANC related services like Care during ANC, Immunization, Screening for High risk cases, Lab services, Mother craft etc are provided. New registrations are done on every Tuesday in a week. Health education regarding immunization of the baby, Child nutrition, personal hygiene, breast feeding etc is given to mothers.
The intra-natal care is provided to mothers by observing safe delivery practices at Urban Health centre. Those who need LSCS are referred to GMCH, Miraj.
The PNC care is provided to the mothers in the home visits with the aim of early detection of complications if any and for providing support and education regarding baby care .
The services are with cafeteria approach commonly in the form of Cu-T insertion, Condom (Nirodh) and OC Pills distribution and providing motivation for sterilization, referral of the patients for laparoscopic tubectomy and vasectomy at Government Medical College, Miraj.
Anti-Tubercuosis treatment under observation is made available to Tuberculosis patients through the DOTS center. Apart from this, home visits for defaulter patients, counseling regarding the disease and support during treatment are provided by Health Care workers. Referral services to GMCH, Miraj are available as per the needs.
This clinic is conducted every Monday and Thursday in the morning session.
Active participation in the Polio Eradication Campaign was there since its initiation. Pulse Polio booths in Center as well as in the community are made available.
Under five children accompanying their mothers are provided with health promotive and protective services including screening and advice for nutritional disorders.
Various camps like Vitamin A camp, De-worming Camps are organized.
Various National Health days are celebrated every year in Urban Health Centre with activities in the Center and in the adopted community. These days are World Health Day, World TB Day, World Diabetes Day, World AIDS Day etc. Activities like Poster Exhibitions, Diagnostic camps, Community Awareness drives are organized.
Various activities like Home visits by Medical Social Workers, Family health study, Screening for the various diseases, Health education for disease prevention and health promotion, Referrals for the diseased persons, Provision of MCH related activities, and Sanitation related services and support and care during epidemic situations are carried out in adopted community.

Health Education to the people in the Urban Health Centre is done at OPD during check-up, immunization, ANC clinic.
During celebration of different national health days, special health education camps are organized in the adopted community.
Research related to Post graduate Dissertations, Interns’ and Undergraduate students’ Projects and epidemiological research along with various surveys and surveillance activities are carried out at UHC & in adopted area .
