History
  • In the month of June 1962 the foundation stone of this college was laid by the then President of India Hon’ble Dr. S. Radhakrishanan.
  • The college was opened on 31st July 1962 at the hands of Hon’ble Shri. Y. B. Chavan, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and then the Defence Minister of India.
  • The student strength was 30.
  • The number of admissions was increased to
    • 60 in 1964
    • to 80 in 1970 and finally
    • to 100 in 1975,
  • With the opening of additional teaching units in the General Hospital, Sangli in 1972, the post-graduate courses of M.D. and M.S. in various subjects were started in 1972.
  • However the General Hospital, Sangli came under the administrative control of the Dean in 1980.
  • The plan of a hospital in the campus of the college, Miraj was accepted by the Government and as a first step, a 200-beded hospital was approved during 1981.
  • The Hospital Complex was inaugurated on 12th November 1994 by Hon’ble Shri. Sharad Pawar, the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
  • The Hospital at Miraj had In-patient strength of 120 beds and the Hospital at Sangli had In-patient strength of 388 beds, which fulfilled the required 500 beds as per MCI Norms.
  • The Wanless hospital de-linked itself unilaterally from the govt. Medical College in 01 April 2004.
College Campus

Total Area of college is about 32.3 acres on east and west of Pandharpur road which includes on

  • East side: Residential Quarters, Ladies’ hostel, Dean bungalow and Gymkhana grounds
  • West side: All Departments (Pre & Paraclinical, Ophthalmology & PSAM) Central Library, Administrative building, Boys’ hostels and Hospital buildings.
